Depart Sydney in the afternoon and start a true journey of contrasts – it will take you through the heights of the majestic Blue Mountains. Make your way to the Outback Explorer Lounge to meet fellow guests and help yourself to a welcome drink before dinner and settling down in your Gold Service cabin for the night.
Wake up in Broken Hill, a classic mining town with wide streets and a pub on every corner. An Off Train Excursion, explores the beauty of this Silver City, its mining history and the thriving artistic culture. Stepping back on board, head straight to Queen Adelaide Restaurant for breakfast. An extensive menu caters to all tastes – from light fare such as bagels, cereals and juices to the traditional cooked Australian breakfast. Take your time as you have a full day on board to yourself. By the time lunch is served, you’ll already be well into South Australia on the southern tip of the Flinders Ranges, before arriving Adelaide mid-afternoon for our overnight accommodation.
Adelaide City sights and PS Murray Princess
Today the touring on your South Australia Discover package commences with an introductory tour of Adelaide’s beautiful attractions. Parklands, historic homes, tree-lined and wide streets blend attractively with North Terrace’s cultural precinct, the National wine Centre and Botanic gardens. Visit the iconic St Peter’s Cathedral or the newly developed Adelaide oval and, for every chocolate lover, a visit to Haigh’s Chocolate for a factory tour and tasting. You will return to your hotel in time to purchase lunch before being transferred to Mannum. Mid-afternoon the PS Murray Princess departs historic Mannum, birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication. Heading down river enjoying drinks and dinner whilst cruising under floodlight to the overnight mooring at Mundarra; possibly spotting nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank as the on-board entertainer provides music for the night owls.
Cruising the Murray River
In 1879 the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which quickly became the bustling township of Murray Bridge. After a hearty breakfast, choose to join a guided tour of the town’s historic landmarks and local attractions or go on a wildlife tour at Monarto Zoo (additional cost). Those who chose to experience Monarto Zoo will arrive back on board the Murray Princess in time for lunch. We continue cruising upriver with a brief stop-over in Mannum for a fascinating visit to Mannum Dock Museum (additional cost).
This afternoon, as we continuing cruising upriver to our overnight mooring at Salt Bush Flat; you will have the opportunity to inspect the wheelhouse with the Captain. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by our talented crew.
Cruising the Murray River
All ashore for the guided nature walk where our guide will share the secrets of the local flora and fauna. It’s a great way to get in a little exercise before the PS Murray Princess departs for the big river gorges and 90 metre cliffs of the upper river. Mid-morning, join us in the Sturt Dining Room for a special presentation on the bounty of food and wine produced in the riverlands. Just after Fromms Landing, we turn and head downriver to River View Lodge (near Piggy Flat / Coolcha) where our discovery vessel awaits for a wildlife tour. Travelling in small, personalised groups, we explore the maze of the river and the birdlife is amazing. Watch for darters, herons and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges. The afternoon offers a choice of bocce or fishing challenges before joining the Captain and Officers for pre-dinner drinks and the Captain’s Dinner and Dance.
After breakfast, PS Murray Princess arrives at Mannum at approximately 9.00am. You say good bye to the PS Murray Princess and join your Barossa Valley Tour. Discover Australia’s richest and best known wine making region – the Barossa. Depart Mannum by coach to the famous Barossa, the beautiful ‘valley of the vine’ and the source of about a quarter of Australia’s world-renowned wines. You will visit two premium wineries, enjoy lunch and fantastic scenery before returning to Adelaide at approximately 5.30pm for the next 2 nights.
Today is free to explore the city of Adelaide or take an afternoon tour to the Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf
Enjoy a scenic coach trip through the Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis. On arrival board the Sealink ferry for the 45 minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island to join your coach tour. Your first stop will be Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery to learn about the history of the oil distillery and take a guided tour, followed by the opportunity to purchase Eucalyptus products. Then travel to Vivonne Bay Bistro located on a 260 hectare bush property, for a two course lunch.
After lunch visit what is sure to be a highlight of your South Australia Discoverer package; Seal Bay Conservation Park and enjoy a guided beach walk with a National Park Ranger amongst a breeding colony of wild and rare Australian Sea Lions. Your tour will then visit another amazing wildlife attraction, the In-flight Birds of Prey Display. Enjoy a delightful interactive experience and meet an array of birds and raptors. From here you will travel to Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park where you can get up close with Koalas, see Penguins swim and play, hand feed Kangaroos and Wallabies, learn about endangered species and interact with snakes and reptiles. You will then be transferred to your overnight accommodation.
Kangaroo Island – Adelaide
After morning hotel pick up your second day of touring begins with a visit to Clifford’s Honey Farm to enjoy an informative talk by the beekeeper followed by tastings and an opportunity to sample homemade honey ice-cream and honey beauty products. Next, travel to Hanson Bay Visitor Centre Cafe for a two course lunch. After lunch you have the chance to look for Koalas nestled up in the eucalypts and see an abundance of native birdlife in the wildlife sanctuary.
Travel to the western most part of the Island, Flinders Chase National Park, one of Australia’s largest and earliest conservation parks. Travel through the park and enjoy breathtaking views of its unique trees, plants and coastal scenery. You will be taken to the rugged southern coastline for a walk around Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Remarkable Rocks provide great photographic opportunities and stunning sea views. Admirals Arch boardwalk takes you down a rugged cliff face to reveal this spectacular arch, a natural nursery and safe haven for playful Long-nosed Fur Seals that can be seen swimming and playing in the waves, or resting on the rocks. Your tour concludes at Penneshaw where you board the Sealink ferry to Cape Jervis before connecting with the coach to Adelaide. Tour concludes at approximately 10:40pm, when you are returned to your overnight accommodation.
