Tuesday 18 September 2018

After breakfast, we continue our outback journey as we head towards the magnificent Flinders Ranges. We travel along the Barrier Highway to Yunta. Here we begin our journey along unsealed roads. First stop the Waukaringa ruins. Now very much deserted, the mine finally closed in 1929 and now only two buildings remain standing as testimony to those early Australian pioneers that worked this site. We spend a little time skirmishing through the surrounding scrub looking for the remains of yesteryear. Continuing on travelling through stations ‘Koonamore’, ‘Nillinghoo’, ‘Curnamona, Frome Downs, Wertaloona and Balcanoona to our stop at Arkaroola.

Outback Flying Adventure

Today is something special. We take a short drive back to Balcanoona all weather airstrip for an adventure like no other. We board our specially chartered 12 Seat Cessna 208 Caravan. Our first destination is iconic outback town of Birdsville. We will fly over “Big Red” the massive sand dune and the sights of Birdsville, landing to walk around and purchase morning tea. Next, we have a very unique experience flying from the QLD Channel Country over the length of Lake Eyre to William Creek, what a view! We land at William Creek for lunch.

Our afternoon adventure takes us over Anna Creek Station Painted Hills. These offer an amazing sight from the air, the varying outcrops with vivid ochre markings, emerging suddenly from the flat desert landscape. Millions of years ago the hills, which consist of highly ironized sandstone, are believed to have formed the shoreline of an inland sea. Erosion has brought the iron to the surface in the dramatic display of colours which can be seen today. On our return to Balcanoona we will fly over the impressive Maree Man a desert artwork which mysteriously appeared in the outback almost two decades ago.

Alternate Flight  0 seats available if prefered

Depart Arkaroola, over the rugged northern parts of Arkaroola then heading north west over stony desert and Stzreslecki Desert, Tirrari Desert, to Lake Eyre North via a portion of the Cooper Creek. Entering North Lake Eyre at the northern end of Madigan Gulf, or Eric Island, a portion of the flight over the Lake will be conducted high enough to take in its expanse. We normally descend as we approach Silcrete Island and track across Belt Bay at 500’ above ground. From the western shore of Belt Bay we proceed to William Creek for lunch.
After lunch and a look around town, we depart to west, overflying Anna Creek Homestead and then track south west to the Painted Hills. After flying low over the Painted Hills we set course and climb to take in the Old Ghan rail line around Curdimurka and the Marree Man. From the Marree Man we fly via Farina Siding and Station, Mount Lydhurst Station and on to Arkaroola.
