Exploring Bright

We wake to the freshness of the Alpine Region this morning, ready for a pleasant day’s exploring one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in the world – the Ovens Valley.  Bright has managed to retain its character and charm, thanks partly to its old-fashioned guest houses and historical buildings. Our local guide will join us for some touring – the area should be looking magnificent! We’ll also take a drive through one of the most beautiful places – the Wandiligong Valley. The whole Wandiligong Valley has been registered with the National Trust. To the south of the town we can see the noted Wandi Poplars, at their best in the autumn, and one of the largest apple orchards in the Southern hemisphere. Tobacco and nuts are also grown in this rural setting.

After lunch at Wandiful Produce in Wandiligong. We return to Bright, we’ll farewell our guide and have a bit of time to wander around the town – perhaps visit the Bright Art Gallery and Cultural Centre as we are lucky enough to be here for the well-known Autumn Art Exhibition. This is regional Victoria’s largest exhibition.  Maybe visit the Bright Chocolate Factory.

Mid-afternoon, we make our way to the Red Stag Deer & Emu Farm. Established in 1987 as a commercial deer farm, here we have a great opportunity to feed, touch and learn about these majestic animals with their unique characters and instinctive behaviour.

Our touring today takes us to Beechworth where we meet our local guide. This imposing historical town will remind us of those exciting gold rush years, with many landmarks still surviving. After our tour, we head to the historic Court House. Built in 1858 and in continuous service for 131 years, the Beechworth Courthouse retains its original furniture and fittings. It is has been the setting of some of the most fascinating court cases in Victoria’s history. It was here that Australia’s most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly, was committed to stand trial for murder. His mother Ellen, brothers Dan and Jim and Uncle Jim Kelly also faced charges in this courtroom. We now have some free time to wander the shops and purchase lunch – maybe from the famous Beechworth Bakery.

This afternoon, we make our way up to Yackandandah, a classic colonial town, having changed little in appearance since last century. Many buildings are classified by the National Trust. Yackandandah has treasured its richness and is still a showpiece of Victoria. Its once hectic High Street is now a wide boulevard of verandahs and stately public buildings. We head ‘home’ via the Kiewa Valley Highway and stop at the Tawonga Gap Lookout. There are some marvelous views from here of Mount Bogong, the highest peak in the Victorian Alps and Mount Beauty.

Bright Autumn Festival

The Bright Autumn Festival is a ten day celebration of the wonderful autumn colours and autumn produce of the valleys of Victoria’s Alpine High Country. We’re lucky enough to be here for the highlight of the festival – Gala Day! So we can enjoy the markets, bands and entertainment at our leisure followed this afternoon by the Grand Parade, the highlight of the festival! After the parade, follow the police band down to the river bank or perhaps enjoy some relaxing time in your room before dinner tonight.
