Following the Oodnadatta track along the Old Ghan Railway you discover natural wonders along the way, learn about the grand plans our forefathers had for the region, meet up with unique outback characters and even visit the famous Pink Roadhouse. Leaving the remote top of South Australia via the Painted Desert you explore one of the natural wonders of the world Uluru as well as Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, Australia’s own Grand Canyon. Completing this memorable outback adventure, we take the Mereenie loop to Palm Valley and onto Alice Springs.

TO BROKEN HILL

Departing on Outback Explorer to start the Arkaroola, Oodnadatta, Red Centre Explorer tour, sitting back and relaxing watching the ever-changing scenery heading to Broken Hill on arrival we will be met by our local tour company who will transfer us to our overnight accommodation.

BROKEN HILL TO ARKAROOLA

Leaving Broken Hill at 8.30am our Arkaroola, Oodnadatta, Red Centre Explorer adventure really begins. We follow the Barrier Highway to Yunta, where we leave the bitumen and head into the South Australian outback. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the verandah of the abandoned Waukeringa hotel, and wonder how life may have been in this remote outpost in days gone by. Heading north into the Flinders Ranges on our way to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary you will be amazed and delighted by the ever-changing landscape. Late afternoon we settle into our motel lodge accommodation for the next 2 nights overlooking the breath-taking vistas around Arkaroola.

ARKAROOLA RIDGETOP TOUR

Arkaroola Oodnadatta Red Centre ExplorerThis morning there is time to just sit back and relax as you soak up the stunning scenery, or perhaps you would like to take a walk to see if you can spot some of the resident Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies. After lunch we join an experience you will never forget, as we hop on board a specially constructed open-top 4WD vehicle to do the famous Arkaroola Ridgetop Tour!  We travel to the top of Sillers Lookout to take in the endless view of this timeless terrain.

Your trained local guide will share their knowledge of Arkaroola’s 1600-million-year geological history as you enjoy an unforgettable journey through some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth.  Wonder at the beauty of Arkaroola’s crystal Mount Gee, and learn about Reg & Grizelda Sprigg who made it their mission to protect this unique wilderness area.

ARKAROOLA TO MARREE

Departing Arkaroola, we head through the Gammon Ranges National Park to Copley and past the Leigh Creek Brown Coa l mine to Lyndhurst. Here we will visit one of the true outback character’s Talc Alf (if he is home), stop in at the Ochre Pits before venturing on to the Farina Ruins and discover the grand plans for this remote outpost. Next it is off to Marree our overnight stop. Time permitting you will be able to take a walk discover some on the unique sights including a Tom Kruse truck, the mosque and the Lake Eyre Sailing Club.

MARREE TO WILLIAM CREEK & SCENIC FLIGHTS

Arkaroola Oodnadatta Red Centre ExplorerToday our journey continues on the true Oodnadatta Track and a memorable morning ahead, see the unusual apocalyptic sculpture park, South Lake Eyre, Historic Curdimurka rail siding and possibly a mound spring before reaching the outback oasis of Coward Springs. Don’t forget to dip your feet in the artesian spring before heading to William Creek for a late lunch. This afternoon you have a choice of one of two – 1hour fights over Lake Eyre or the geological marvel of Anna Creek Station Painted Hills only accessible by air. (If you would like to fly over both this can be arranged for an additional cost.)

OODNADATTA – PAINTED DESERT

Arkaroola Oodnadatta Red Centre ExplorerToday we continue along the Oodnadatta track following the Old Ghan Railway to Oodnadatta the home of the Pink Roadhouse. After exploring Oodnadatta, we leave the Oodnadatta Track back tracking a few km’s before heading to the Arckaringa Hills ‘the Painted Desert’ an exciting outback experience to explore, get up close and personal to Mother Nature’s art piece. From here we head across to Cadney Homestead. Leaving the dirt behind for a few days, we have the bitumen of the Stuart Highway following the Central Australian Railway (the New Ghan railway) to our overnight stop at Marla.

MARLA TO AYERS ROCK

Today on the Arkaroola, Oodnadatta, Red Centre Explorer tour is essentially a transfer day, we head north along the Stuart Highway to Erldunda Roadhouse for well-earned break to stretch your legs before turning left heading west to Yulara. After checking in we will grab some bubbly and nibbles heading out to see one of the great sights in outback Australia the sun setting on Uluru before dinner.

AYERS ROCK TO KINGS CANYON

Today the next section of our Arkaroola, Oodnadatta, Red Centre Explorer adventure begins, as we head off to explore Uluru with a Base tour and walk before heading to the Cultural Centre. Next we head off to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) exploring Walpa Gorge or the Valley of the Winds before returning to Yulara. Departing Yulara we head to Kings Canyon Resort or home for 2 nights settling into our rooms prior to the sun setting over Kings Canyon.

KINGS CANYON

Arkaroola Oodnadatta Red Centre ExplorerToday you will have the choice of walks for the more adventurous the Rim Walk approx. 3 ½ hours strenuous walk and a high level of fitness required. The Kings Creek Walk meanders up the centre of the canyon to a lookout point on the left hand side of the valley, which affords a view of the sheer cliff face at the end of the canyon, requires only a moderate level of fitness. Kathleen Springs Walk is suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Signs along the track tell stories of Aboriginal Culture and the recent cattle industry. It leads to a spring-fed waterhole at the head of Kathleen Gorge. This is a cool moist place to sit and enjoy the area’s tranquillity. After the walks the rest of the day is yours to relax.

KINGS CANYON – PALM VALLEY – ALICE SPRINGS

Departing Kings Canyon, we head to Alice Springs via Mereenie Loop Rd (subject to road conditions) a true 4WD track. On our adventure today will visit The Aboriginal settlement of Hermannsburg. This is famous as the home of Aboriginal landscape watercolour artist Albert Namatjira. Continuing on to Palm Valley, a remnant of the rain forests that once covered our ancient continent and now acts as the last niche for a diverse range of plant species. All of this before heading into Alice Springs for the next 2 nights.

Make your way to hotel (own expense) close to Central Station for your overnight accommodation.
